campus life

Beautiful autumn days were a rarity this year, so yesterday’s sun was a treat! We took advantage of the blue skies and headed down to see Alyssa at the U of M – Twin Cities.

She’s only been home once so far this year and won’t be home again until Thanksgiving. Being a CA (community/resident hall advisor) has been awesome for her, but requires her to be there on most weekends.

We also had an opportunity to spend some time with a special guy in her life, Erik, and to experience Annie’s Parlor’s hot fudge/coffee malts. I must say it’s a wonderful way to get my RDA of caffeine!

Here are some more shots from the day using my Canon 50mm/1.8 lens. So lightweight and compact…perfect for days like this! I also enjoyed shooting into the afternoon sun, causing streaks of sun flare and softer images. You should try it!

The autumn colors were fading, however, we found some foliage still in its glory.

For me, not much tops time with our oldest on a college campus in the fall! Love you Lys!

  1. I first saw your pictures on Alyssa’s facebook, but I wanted to let you know that I think your pictures are amazing!

I’m in awe, I truly am. I’m a little bit of an aspiring photographer myself, more as a hobby though, but I can’t take pictures of people. Your shots are great, and I really enjoy looking at them all.

  2. Thanks, Manuel….would love to see your images! And, yes, you can shoot people…practice, practice, practice! At the football games is one place! I’ve seen some cute self portraits of all of you at the games…

  3. Hey Michelle,

I’m a CA over in Middlebrook, and your pictures constantly show up on my Facebook livefeed.

I’m a huge fan of photography, and your work is nothing short of amazing. I’ve been thinking about getting a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens for my Rebel XT. Would you say that it’s a pretty good investment?

  4. Hey Jimmy.

Yes, I totally recommend it as a good investment to go with the Rebel. The next step up is the Canon 50mm/1.4 at $400, so for 1/5th the cash the 50/1.8 is a great one to play with.

It is lightweight, so not as durable. However, that’s one of the reasons I love it. I can bring it when I don’t want a bulky camera on my shoulder. 🙂

The other prime lens I have is the Canon 85mm/1.8 which was around $400. A bit meatier and offers sharp portraits with amazing bokeh (blurred backgrounds). However, I am really satisfied with the 50mm/1.8 for uses like this post when I want something compact.

Looking forward to seeing some of your work!
